Four Instructional Models And A Confused Student

I recently studied a graphic done by Dr. Ludmila Smirnova that outlined four "families" of instructional models.  I recognized some of the concepts in the models but many seemed new and/or confusing to me.  Perhaps you can shed some light on my following questions.

  1. What is project-based learning?
  2. What is synectics?
  3. What would an information-processing family entail? Is this based on the information-processing theory of learning?
  4. What is nondirective teaching?
  5. Why the name "behavioral systems family"?
  6. Why the name "personal family"?
  7. What are the ways these models overlap and/or correspond to each other?
  8. Are there other credible instructional models that are not mentioned?
  9. What do these instructional model families look like when applied to authentic teaching and learning?

  1. Hi Tara,
Questions abound! That is for sure. I havn't delved into the article yet so please look for my post for some possible answers. One thing I do know and have seen done is Synectics. This is teaching an entire lesson through the use of analogies. This encourages some very high thinking of students.
Thanks for your comment on the Big Question. I do thnk that teaching organization to students is paramount for them to just keep up with the dynamic nature of technology.
